“Is there a grant for pensioners to get new windows?” is one of the most common calls we take — often from adult children researching for their parents. The honest answer: there is no single “pensioner window grant”, but there are three separate schemes that between them cover most situations, and one of them can pay for the entire job, free. Here is each route, who qualifies, and the order to apply in.
The short answer: Pensioners get the same standard SEAI windows grant as everyone else (€1,500–€4,000 by home type). On top of that, over-70s and people on qualifying welfare payments may get windows replaced entirely free under the SEAI Warmer Homes Scheme. And homeowners aged 66+ can add the local-authority Housing Aid for Older People grant — up to €8,000 or 95% of the cost. Check the free scheme first; use the other two together if you do not qualify.
Route 1 — The standard SEAI windows grant (everyone, including pensioners)
The SEAI windows and doors grant has no age condition — a pensioner gets exactly the same fixed amount as any homeowner: €1,500 (apartment), €1,800 (mid-terrace), €3,000 (semi-detached) or €4,000 (detached), plus €800 per door (maximum two). Conditions: you own and live in the home, it was built before 2011, the windows installed are A-rated, and you use an SEAI-registered installer — check your eligibility in 5 minutes. Route 2 — The Warmer Homes Scheme: free windows for those who qualify
This is the one most pensioners have never heard of. The SEAI Warmer Homes Scheme provides fully funded energy upgrades at zero cost to homeowners who are aged 70 or over, or who receive a qualifying welfare payment — Fuel Allowance, Working Family Payment, Domiciliary Care Allowance, Carer’s Allowance (living with the person you care for), One Parent Family Payment, or Jobseeker’s/Disability Allowance for 6+ months. After a free SEAI survey, the upgrade can include window and door replacement where the surveyor recommends it, alongside attic and wall insulation. Route 3 — Housing Aid for Older People: up to €8,000 from your local authority
Run by city and county councils (not SEAI), the Housing Aid for Older People Scheme helps homeowners aged 66 and over with essential repairs — and window or door replacement qualifies where the existing units are beyond repair. The grant pays up to €8,000 or 95% of the approved cost, whichever is lower, and is means-tested on household income. You apply to your local authority; full details are on citizensinformation.ie. A worked example: a pensioner couple in a Kildare semi fitting 8 A-rated casement windows (about €6,000–€8,000 fitted) claims the €3,000 SEAI windows grant. If the old windows are beyond repair, Housing Aid for Older People can cover most of the remaining €3,000–€5,000. On the free Warmer Homes route, the same job costs them nothing at all.
