The most common patio door replacement we carry out in Kildare is the original 2.0m or 2.4m white uPVC slider that was specced into estate homes between 1995 and 2010. Twenty years of dragging across the bottom track wears out the runners, the rollers seize, and the door has either jammed half-open or has been muscled shut for the last three winters. The fix is rarely a repair - the seals, gaskets, lock and roller assemblies have all aged out together, and a fresh A-rated unit costs less than a piecemeal repair while delivering 30 percent better thermal performance.
Where Kildare homeowners are upgrading rather than replacing like-for-like, the trend is clearly towards larger openings and aluminium frames. The bigger detached homes around Naas, Sallins, Clane and Kildare Town often go from a 2.4m sliding door to a 3.0-3.6m aluminium lift-and-slide, with anthracite grey frames inside and out. The uplift in light into the kitchen-diner is dramatic, and a slim 50mm aluminium meeting stile reads almost frameless when slid open.
For more compact gardens - the older estate homes in Maynooth village, Athy and Newbridge - French doors with a sidelight either side remain a favourite. They open into the garden as a feature rather than a slab of glass, and the espagnolette locking gives a satisfying mechanical close.

Common questions when planning a new garden or patio door in Kildare.
French doors are a pair of hinged doors that swing open from a centre meeting stile - traditional, decorative, and most often used onto a patio off a kitchen or living room. Patio sliding doors run on a track with one fixed and one sliding panel (or two sliding panels), giving you a wider clear opening and zero swing-out clearance needed. For a typical Kildare extension where floor space is tight, sliding patio doors are the practical choice. For a more decorative opening onto a smaller patio or garden room, French doors win on appearance.
Standard 2-panel uPVC patio doors run 1.8m to 2.4m wide. For openings up to 4m we move to aluminium lift-and-slide systems, which use roller carriages rated for the heavier glazing. Above 4m we typically recommend a multi-panel slider or bi-fold. The bigger Kildare detached homes built in the 2000s commonly take a 2.4m to 3.0m unit onto the back garden - that gives a clear walkthrough without dominating the rear elevation.
Yes, with the right hardware. We fit espagnolette multi-point locking on French doors with anti-lift bolts at the top and shootbolts at the bottom of the active leaf. For exposed sites - the elevated estates around Kilcullen, Athgarvan or the Curragh-edge homes near Newbridge - we recommend a triple-glazed unit with Q-lon weatherseals to stop wind whistle.
