Stand on Quinsboro Road in Bray or walk along Trafalgar Road in Greystones and you can read the entire history of Wicklow front doors at a glance: Edwardian and Victorian timber four-panel doors with stained glass fanlights still standing on the older terraces, white 1990s uPVC on the wave of estate housing that filled the Bray hinterland, builder-grade composites on the 2010-era Sallins-style developments around Delgany and Newtownmountkennedy, and increasingly, anthracite grey and black composites with chrome hardware on owner-upgrades over the past five years.
The pattern matters because the front door is the single most-photographed feature of any house listing. Every Wicklow estate agent we work with confirms it - the property's listing photos are dominated by the elevation shot, and the elevation shot is dominated by the front door. A tired, faded, mismatched front door can knock €10-€20k off a property's perceived value before a buyer steps inside. Pair with a chrome or matte-black bar handle, a matching letterplate, and either a clear-glass cassette for light or a frosted privacy cassette where the door faces the street directly. The questions Wicklow homeowners ask most often when choosing a new front door.
For a front entrance, we recommend composite nine times out of ten. The slab is heavier (40-48mm versus 28mm), the door has a more solid feel underhand, the timber-grain finishes read as a real timber door from the street, and the kerb-appeal premium it adds to a Wicklow home is worth far more than the €600-€900 cost difference. uPVC remains a great choice for back, side and garden doors where the door is functional rather than seen. The exception: rented or rental-spec properties where the front door is largely about security and ventilation rather than visual statement - uPVC at €1,200 + VAT is the right call there.
For period properties especially - the Edwardian terraces along the Bray Esplanade, the Victorian villas around Greystones village, the older homes around the Wicklow Town harbour - a well-chosen front door adds disproportionate value. It is the single most-photographed feature of any house listing on Daft.ie or MyHome.ie. We have seen clients receive bids €15-€25k above asking after a sub-€2,500 front door upgrade made the property photograph dramatically better. The same effect applies to modern detached homes around Delgany and Newtownmountkennedy where a black or anthracite composite replacing a tired 1990s white uPVC instantly modernises the elevation.
Every front door we fit is built to PAS24:2022 - the British standard for enhanced security doors - and Secured by Design certified. That covers a five-point hookbolt locking system, an anti-snap TS007 3-star cylinder (the Garda specifically warn against the older 1-star and 2-star cylinders), internally beaded glass cassettes, security hinges with anti-jemmy bolts, and a reinforced sash structure. Composite doors add the structural advantage of a solid GRP and polyurethane core that cannot be split or kicked through the way a hollow uPVC sash potentially can.
A standard front door installation takes 4 to 6 hours from start to finish - lift out the old door and frame, prep and level the opening, set the new frame plumb, fit the sash, install cylinder, handles and threshold, reseal externally with low-modulus silicone, and finish the inside reveal. The home is wind- and watertight before our fitter leaves. Where the property has a porch or a complex side panel arrangement, allow a full day. We run that schedule daily across Bray, Greystones, Wicklow Town, Arklow and Blessington.
For uPVC front doors, lead time from quote acceptance to fitted is typically 4 to 5 weeks - we hold most colours in stock and the bottleneck is the bespoke glass cassette manufacture. For composite doors (including Palladio, our Irish-made range), allow 4 to 6 weeks - the door is built to your exact size, colour, glass and hardware spec at the Cavan plant. Custom hardware (chrome handles, brass letterplates, knockers) can add a week. Survey-to-fitted in a month is standard for any straightforward front door order across the county.
